Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, husband of Queen Elizabeth II and the longest-serving royal consort in British history, has passed away at the age of 99.

He passed away peacefully Friday morning at Windsor Castle.

Prince Philip was born in 1921, and married Elizabeth II over 73 years ago in 1947, six years before she became queen in 1953.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau released a statement following Prince Philip's death. He said “Prince Philip was a man of great purpose and conviction, who was motivated by a sense of duty to others. He will be fondly remembered as a constant in the life of our Queen – a lifelong companion who was always at her side offering unfailing support as she carried out her duties.”

Trudeau concluded his statement by saying “A family has lost a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. The thoughts of Canadians are with Queen Elizabeth II and the members of the Royal Family as they mourn such a significant loss.”

Flags have been lowered at all federal buildings across Canada, and will remain lowered until sunset on the day of the funeral or memorial service to mark the death of the Duke of Edinburgh.
