Pierre Poilievre has been elected as the new leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.
The Ottawa-area MP earned an impressive 68.15% of the points on the first ballot, compared to his nearest opponent, former Quebec premier Jean Charest, who earned just 16.07% of the points.
Poilievre nearly swept every riding in the country, winning 330 of the 338 ridings in Canada. Charest won six ridings in Quebec and two in Ontario.
Fundraising totals also show a clear preference for Poilievre across Canada. Over the course of the leadership race, Poilievre raised more than $6.7 million, while Charest raised $2.7 million.
Poilievre’s victory speech focused on the economy, and promised to give Canadians more control over their money and lives.
His campaign also focused on reducing bureaucracy, by vowing to fire what he calls government “gatekeepers” and promising to introduce legislation that would simplify language used in government documents.
