The federal government’s carbon tax will come into effect on July 1 in New Brunswick, as the provincial government has decided to eliminate its own provincial carbon tax.

When the provincial carbon tax of 11 cents per litre on gasoline expires on July 1, the federal carbon tax of 14.3 cents per litre will take effect.

New Brunswickers will begin to receive quarterly federal carbon tax rebates in October, amounting to $736 per year for a family of four.

Federal environment and climate change minister Steven Guilbeault said the majority of New Brunswick households will receive more money in rebates than they will pay in carbon taxes.
