Sources with knowledge of the Prime Minister's plans say Trudeau is planning to visit the Governor General at Rideau Hall on Sunday to ask that parliament be dissolved. While Governor General Mary Simon could say no to the Prime Minister's plans, such a decision would be out of line with parliamentary tradition.
Following his visit with the Governor General, Trudeau is expected to announce a 36-day election campaign, with election day being set for September 20th. 36 days is the shortest campaign length permitted by law.
The leaders of both the Conservative Party and the NDP have criticized the possibility of an early election call.
