A deal has been formed between the federal Liberals and NDP, to keep the Trudeau government in power until 2025.
In exchange for moving forward on key priorities, the NDP will support the government in motions of confidence until the end of the current session, which will end in 2025.
As part of the agreement, a new dental care program would start with those under 12-years-old this year, then expand to those under 18, seniors, and people living with a disability in 2023. The program would then be fully implemented by 2025. It would be restricted to families with an income of less than $90,000 annually, with no co-pays for those who earn less than $70,000 per year.
The agreement will also see the government work towards implementing a national pharmacare program by passing a Canada Pharmacare Act by then end of next year.
Another NDP priority being taken on by the Liberal government is housing. under the agreement, the government will extend the Rapid Housing Initiative for another year, and will implement a Homebuyer's Bill of Rights by then end of 2023.
Candice Bergen, the interim leader of the Conservative party, called the agreement a power grab, adding the prime minister only does what's best for himself, and not what's best for Canadians.
Yves-Francois Blanchet, leader of the Bloc Québécois, called the agreement a "false majority."
