According to Nicole Jewett, a small animal practitioner and New Brunswick Veterinary Medical Association registrar, the number of cases of Lyme disease in dogs is increasing in New Brunswick.
Lyme disease is primarily caused by black-legged and deer ticks, and with the spring season underway, pet owners should remain vigilant in protecting their pets from blood-sucking ticks.
Some symptoms of Lyme disease in dogs include fever, swollen joints, appetite loss, and shifting lameness in legs. While many dogs with Lyme disease do not experience symptoms, severe cases can cause kidney failure, heart issues, and focal meningitis.
