The Canadian Red Cross has distributed most of the $30.9 million raised through its Hurricane Fiona in Canada Appeal campaign.

More than 54,000 payments of $500 to registered households in Eastern Canada have been distributed, for a total of over $27 million.

26,500 households in PEI, 22,000 households in Nova Scotia, and 317 households in southwestern Newfoundland received payments.

Red Cross Spokesman Dan Bedell said nearly 6,000 households in the three provinces received a second $500 payment because of “exceptional or unique needs.”

The federal government pledged to match all donations made through the Hurricane Fiona in Canada Appeal until the end of October. Bedell said the funds from Ottawa haven’t arrived yet.
