A new survey from Narrative Research shows that most Canadians are unaware of Bill C-11, with less than four in ten respondents saying they are aware of the bill.
The Online Streaming Act - also known as Bill C-11, was recently passed in the House of Commons, and provides the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) with the authority to regulate content on online streaming companies like YouTube, Netflix, and Spotify. Many Canadian content creators on these platforms have openly objected to the Bill, fearing that their work will be overshadowed if recommended content is controlled by the CRTC. The bill is currently with the senate for review, and will be voted on and returned to the House of Commons for a final vote before becoming law.
While the majority of Canadians are unaware of the bill, those who are aware of C-11 are more likely to oppose it. 32% completely or somewhat oppose the Online Streaming Act, and 25% completely or somewhat support the bill.
