New Brunswick Liberal leader Susan Holt has announced her intention to run for a vacant seat in the riding of Bathurst East-Nepisiguit-Saint-Isidore.
Holt was elected party leader on August 6, but does not yet hold a seat in the provincial legislature.
She had several ridings to choose from when deciding where to run. MLA Denis Landry resigned his seat in Bathurst East-Nepisiguit-Saint-Isidore to move to municipal politics, MLA Daniel Guitard resigned his seat in Restigouche-Chaleur because he planned to run for mayor in the new community of Belle-Baie, and former interim Liberal leader Roger Melanson resigned his seat in Dieppe.
The riding of Bathurst East-Nepisiguit-Saint-Isidore, where Holt will be running in a byelection that has yet to be scheduled, is one of the safest Liberal constituencies in the province, with Landry earning 63.8 per cent of the vote in the previous election.
