Fully vaccinated Canadians will be allowed to enter the United States at land borders and by ferry crossings starting in early November.

The border has been closed for non-essential travel since March 2020, and while an exact date for the reopening has not yet been determined, the announcement is welcome news for many.

U.S. officials say a number of details are still being worked out, including the type of documentation that will be accepted for Canadians to show proof of vaccination.

Canadians crossing the border will be questioned about their vaccination status by border agents, but will not be required to show proof of vaccination unless they are sent for a secondary screening.

The U.S. has also not yet decided whether those who received mixed vaccine doses will be allowed into the country. The U.S. has not approved either the mixing of vaccine doses or the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Canada opened its border to fully vaccinated Americans in August, but the U.S. continued to extend their border closures. The current border closure is set to expire on October 21st.
